The past few years have seen the passing of a number of pioneers and teachers of spiritual ecology. This autumn and winter, we’re honouring their work, and more widely, a generation who have been so integral in laying the foundation over the past half century — within science, activism, environmentalism, and faith communities — for a modern eco-spiritual consciousness in the Global North and beyond.

Join us for a journey into the lineage of spiritual ecology with this truly revolutionary collection of teachers.

About the Book

A foundational work of spiritual ecology, World as Lover, World as Self brings together Joanna Macy’s writing on ecological consciousness, systems thinking, Buddhism and the work of social and planetary transformation.

Written across several decades of environmental and social activism, these essays ask what becomes possible when we move beyond seeing the Earth as a collection of separate objects and recover our experience of the world as alive, interconnected and worthy of our love.

Joanna Macy was an environmental activist, Buddhist scholar and one of the pioneering voices of spiritual ecology.

“To be alive in this beautiful, self-organizing universe—to participate in the dance of life…is a wonder beyond words.”

— Joanna Macy

How it Works

Each month, we select a book exploring ecology, culture and spirituality, taking the time to read it, and at the end of the month, we gather online in a facilitated space offering curated discussion prompts and other practices to help us deepen into the core themes and the wider work of spiritual ecology.

All are welcome, wherever you’re up to with the book. If price is a barrier, please get in touch: hello@themustardseedspace.com

New books are announced each month through our newsletter —sign up to stay updated.

Follow along on Instagram where we share ongoing stories and reflections throughout the month.

What to Expect

Sessions are lightly facilitated and carefully designed to offer space for depth, contemplation and dialogue:

  • Reflections on the month’s text, its core themes and how we can practically integrate the ideas into our lives and/or work.

  • Space for discussion and contemplation with curated discussion prompts and other experiential practices

  • An intimate and thoughtful group atmosphere

  • An international reading community

About the Book Club

The book club is inspired by the call that, at this moment of profound planetary crisis, we must respond by going deeper. Taking the time to think and reflect consciously and in community on our relationship with the living world — outer physical as well as inner spiritual— is an important part of this work of regeneration.

This monthly space offers the opportunity to read (or listen), and be led by the stories and teachings of a diverse collection of indigenous and non-indigenous writers, thinkers and activists, both established and emerging, who are leading the way in the global movement of spiritual, ecological and cultural renewal.

Authors include ecologists, scientists, nature writers, storytellers, psychologists, climate activists and more. The books cover a range of themes from grief to the rights of rivers, decolonising storytelling, and gift economies — but all of them contain transformative power, taking us on journeys that provoke, inspire, educate, and ultimately move us to experience ourselves and the living world in new ways.

“Joining the book club was one of the highlights of 2026”

— Rosie G
